As we’ve been discussing how we seek the presence of God, here’s something else to consider—we’re invited to his table. There are at least three types of tables talked about in the Bible.
Table of Intimacy- Several places in the Gospels describe times when Jesus joined others around a table. Sometimes this was his disciples, but often he dined with "sinners" that the religious people were appalled to be around. We can learn a lot from how Jesus interacted with people. The table is a very intimate place. Think about it. How many people get to join you around your table? Probably not that many. It's reserved for special friends and family members.
That's Jesus. He wants to have this sort of intimacy with us. He wants to join us in our home and just hang out with us. When you are around the table, you are usually not trying to get a lot done. It's a time to eat, perhaps, but it's a time to visit and linger a while, building relationships. There's not really an agenda. We can just enjoy being together.
Table of Presence- There are other scriptures related to the table that was in the tabernacle. It was a holy place where the Bread of the Presence was kept. The note in my study Bible about this said, "It reminded the people that God would provide sustenance for them. Above all, that sustenance was His presence." Oh, I like that! We are fed by the presence of God and he sustains us!
Table of Warfare- Finally, I think of the verse that says, "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." (Psalm 23:5) I love the idea that we can sit at the Lord's table and eat and our enemies have to watch! Somehow, from this position of rest and reliance upon God, He fights for us on our behalf.
All that to say, we are invited to the table! It’s a place of intimacy, nourishment, and breakthrough.
